Update: The Panthers have named Glick Team President as of 5PM Friday – Glick will officially join the team on September 16th.

While reports swirl that the Panthers plan to hire Tom Glick of the Manchester City Football Club to be their Team President, as first reported by  Jeff Darlington of ESPN – an official spokesman for the team said that they have no announcement regarding the Team President and that the team is “still working through the process.” The hiring would fill the position that has sat empty for 18 months after Danny Morrison resigned in February of 2017, but sources with the team will not confirm the hire.

So consider this a hypothetical look at a candidate for the position of Team President.

New owner David Tepper said during his introductory press conference last month that he had zeroed in on a couple of candidates and he was looking for someone with “experience running a sports team” in addition to the marketing and development side of a team.

“I just want to make sure that the person will be able to build a good team here and understand the philosophy…of openness and a team environment and one of family,” Tepper said. “We’re a family here and I want to make sure people understand that that family includes the football side and that includes the business side.”

Glick has worked in multiple sports, but his most recent position was as Chief Commercial Officer for Manchester City in the United Kingdom – throughout his career, Glick has spent time in baseball, hockey, basketball and soccer in both the UK and the United States. He spent 14 years working minor league baseball to begin his career before moving to the NBA and holding multiple positions, including Chief Marketing Officer for the New Jersey Nets that coincided with the team’s relocation to Brooklyn.

Glick then moved from the NBA across the pond to join City Football Group for three years before coming back to America to serve as President of the New York City Football Club of the MLS; Manchester City Football Club, of which Glick served as both Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer for Manchester City FC as well as Managing Director of City Football Marketing from 2012-2015, was purchased in 2008 for £210m and has increased to over £2 billion in 2018, according to Forbes Magazine.

The Manchester City Supporters Club, an officially recognized group of loyal Manchester City fans who have come together to share unforgettable City moments and to cheer on the Club they love, has over 170 branches worldwide – the closest to Charlotte is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The potential new Team President’s relationship to Major League Soccer, an organization that Tepper has namedropped twice during press conferences since becoming the owner, will likely continue to fan the flames of a professional soccer team coming to the Queen City.

“We are well of David Tepper’s interest and obviously that is a great development for the city,” MLS Commisioner Dan Garber said during an online social media Q&A session earlier this month. “We are intrigued by Charlotte.”
