After visiting foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson after being “frustrated” with the recovery from his Lisfranc injury, Cam Newton was recommended that continued rest and rehabilitation rather than surgery was the best tact moving forward, according to a report from Ian Rapoport.
However, Newton is not ready to return and with many more weeks of continued rehab and rest needed, the possibility of injured reserve is apparently on the table for the Carolina Panthers’ franchise quarterback, who was battled shoulder injuries over the past year as well as suffering a mid-foot sprain in Week 3 of the preseason. Newton had been wearing a walking boot until a few weeks ago but appeared to be trending upwards by appearing at practice last week and warming up on the field in San Francisco.
But after the visit to Anderson, the Panthers and Newton are mulling what makes the most sense for the Panthers quarterback, who has only one year left on the contract extension he signed in 2015.
There continues to be no timetable for the quarterback’s return.
“He’s going up and probably seeing one of the best foot doctors,” head coach Ron Rivera said Friday. “and whatever we get from the doctor, I think will probably really impact the decisions going forward.”
The 4-3 Panthers, who are 4-1 with Kyle Allen at the helm while Newton has been out, face the 4-4 Tennessee Titans at 1p Sunday.
