The Carolina Panthers opened their 2017 season with a win over the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The defense was absolutely dominant, allowing less than 220 total yards and forcing two turnovers; with the defense providing short fields and excellent field position, a less-than-effective offense led by a rusty Cam Newton was easy to overcome. Newton had trouble controlling his throws in the first half, overthrowing two wide open targets before firing an ill-advised long ball that was intercepted before shaking off some of the rust to finish 6-for-6 in the second half. The running game was clicking, with Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Stewart amassing over 30 carries between the two of them.
