As the world struggles to deal with the far-reaching effects of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is trying to do his part for the local community by launching a fundraising effort called “22 And You” that will support front-line medical workers including physicians, nurses and other hospital staff battling the COVID-19 pandemic in hospitals throughout the Carolinas.

The 23-year old McCaffrey, who in 2019 established himself as one of the best running backs in the league by posting only the third 1,000/1,000 season in NFL history, said in a statement on the newly created website that he would match donations that partners Lowe’s and Bose have already donated to the program.

“Like all of you, I have been watching the COVID-19 public health emergency unfold with shock and sadness. I am moved by the heroic and selfless efforts of our frontline healthcare providers throughout the Carolinas and beyond. As such, I have decided to launch an effort to help them in their life-saving work.

I have created a program called “22 and You” to raise much needed funds for our healthcare heroes. My partners at Lowe’s Home Improvement and Bose have stepped up and donated to the program. We will be directing the monies raised to North Carolina Healthcare Foundation and South Carolina Hospital Association Foundation.

I am personally matching the commitment of these great companies and encourage people to donate whatever you can: $22, $220, or $2,200.”

McCaffrey, who is now unequivocally the face of the Panthers franchise after this offseason’s exodus from the locker room that included the release of Greg Olsen and Cam Newton along with the retirement of Luke Kuechly, should be commended for entrenching himself in the local community.

Panthers owner David Tepper, through the David A. Tepper Charitable Foundation, has already donated over $2.6m to help the local community in the face of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Panthers were due to begin their offseason program next week, but the NFL has ordered all team facilities closed until at least April 8th and North Carolina has issued a state-wide “Stay at Home Order” until April 29th which instructs residents to stay at home except to visit essential businesses, to exercise outdoors or to help a family member. The order also bans gatherings of more than 10 people and directs everyone to physically stay at least six feet apart from others.
