Run Defense
Corners might not be signed specifically for their run defense, but it is still an important part of the game and one in which Cockrell is, at the very least, competent. While he isn’t quite a big as either Worley or Bradberry, Cockrell still looks to be a willing tackler. On the following play, he also shows nice technique in going low and wrapping up the ball carrier:
When faced with a ball carrier head-on, he shows the strength to get them down without allowing significant yards after contact:
While he can occasionally get caught on blocks, he at least shows effort in trying to disengage and fights to the ball carrier:
Cockrell may not be the greatest cover corner in the NFL, but given his contract, ability to make plays on the ball, scheme fit and likely role as the #2 in Carolina, Cockrell looks to be an excellent addition. Paired with James Bradberry, he should give the Panthers a pair of good young corners who are able to effective in both man and zone coverage; if the Panthers show a willingness to bring less consistent pressure in order to protect their corners, then this could be a very effective pairing going forwards, certainly the best since the pairing of Norman and Tillman in 2015.
