The final preseason game is in the books and now roster cuts will begin over the next few days – while there isn’t a lot to glean from a game in which most roster decisions may have already been made, it’s always interesting to see who gets a lot – or only a few – snaps as the Panthers attempt to take one last look at evaluating the talent on the roster.
Kofi Amichia and Taylor Hearn played every single offensive snap and while Amichia wasn’t expected to make the roster – and his gaffe that led to the strip-sack of Will Grier won’t help – the use of Hearn for that many snaps may be a harbinger of where he lies in the coaches views, after spending the final four games of 2018 on the main roster, he may be headed back to the practice squad to start the season.
In the battle for nickel cornerback, Javien Elliott (2) played the fewest snaps of any defender and certainly appears to be the leader in the clubhouse for that roster spot; for those still curious, the lack of playing time for Vernon Butler (7) may have revealed that his roster status is a foregone conclusion as well. Rookie Will Grier (36) played his best game of the season and accounted for over half of the quarterback’s snaps – he finished with 189 yards passing, one touchdown and one pick.
