Cam Newton’s press conference often gets away from football almost on a weekly basis – usually the talk is about outfits, his hobbies or his kids in which words like drip, sauce and swag come out early and often.

This week, with the Steelers loss settling into the rear view mirror and a matchup in Detroit looming large as the Panthers head into the second half of the season, Newton started talking about the multiple defensive looks of the Lions and how a few days off for the mini-bye has helped both himself and the rest of the Panthers get healthy – once Newton revealed that he spent some of the four-day weekend with his family, the subject turned quickly from the Lions to a more – ahem – interesting topic.

Let’s just say Cam had us at merlot.

“I got the opportunity to go to the [Auburn] game, which some people may have saw,” said Newton. “It was fun. Just kind of relaxed – a lot of cigar smoking, wine drinking, [and] milk feeding. It was cool – but Daddy’s got to get back to work. Chosen was looking at me sideways like, ‘Bruh, you lost. Bad. Got a 50 spot put up on you – can’t let that keep happening,’ so hopefully when I go see him on Monday or Tuesday or he comes to see me, we have another discussion.”

Did you say wine drinking?

“I picked up a hobby, man, and it’s cool. I think I’m on sauvignon blanc right now and it’s a really light wine [to go with] a good mild smoke.”

Newton went on to say that he wishes he had the gifts of a sommelier after watching the documentary ‘Somm‘, which details the amount of work that goes into being a wine expert; he also joked about a sommelier, Rudy Patino, the team has on staff – just to be clear, Patino runs the player’s kitchen and happens to have a sommelier license, not someone who is pouring pinot grigio before a big game.

“He’s everything for us,” said Newton when he realized he didn’t know exactly what Patino’s job title was. “He’s like the real MVP…He’s one of the nicest people I’ve come across everyday – between him and [team ambassador] Mr. Coleman, it would be a doggone cold day in hell to see both of them frowning on the same day.”

One more thing: the 29-year old quarterback says it’s too early to tell about whether he’d like to open his own vineyard, but he already has the name picked out: Boogie Down Vineyards. With that being said, there’s only one question left to ask.

“Anything else about the Detroit Lions?”
