Mark Koncz has been relieved of his duties as director of player personnel for the Carolina Panthers by interim general manager Marty Hurney, sources say. Charlotte Observer’s Joe Person was the first to report that Koncz, who had been with the team since 1994, had been fired Monday afternoon. Koncz had been promoted to director of player personnelĀ in May by former GM Dave Gettleman after serving as the team’s director of pro scouting for 16 years, and some believed he was a candidate to replace Gettleman when he was fired last week.

Koncz joins Gettleman and former team president Danny Morrison as front office casualties as the team recovers from a 6-10 season and heads into training camp this week. The surprise firing of Gettleman last week came just eight days before players report to training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC after an offseason that saw Morrison resign and assistant GM Brandon Beane accept a promotion to general manager of the Buffalo Bills. The timing of the Gettleman release prompted owner Jerry Richardson to rehire former Panthers GM Marty Hurney in an interim role, and Hurney has made multiple moves in his first week on the job.

Aside from the firing of Koncz today, Hurney has signed guard Trai Turner to a four year, $45 million extension and released offensive tackle Michael Oher, who had been in the NFL’s concussion protocol since September of last year. He also signed free agent wide receiver Trevor Graham to the roster.

No replacement has been named at this time, but Matt Allen is the current director of pro personnel. The Panthers begin training camp with their first practice this Wednesday.
