The Carolina Panthers are looking to a familiar face to fill the general manager role for the 2017 season in the wake of the surprise firing of Dave Gettleman on Monday. The team has hired Marty Hurney, who previously filled the role from 2002-2012, as interim general manager to steer the ship for the season while they search for a permanent replacement. With training camp beginning in just one week, owner Jerry Richardson thought it best to have Hurney, who is familiar with the coaching staff and culture of the team, guide the Panthers throughout the 2017 season. According to Panthers writer Max Henson, “In addition to his responsibilities managing the entire football operation, Hurney will help identify Carolina’s next GM.” Hurney had this to say:

“I never lost the connection with the organization. I’ve gained a lot of perspective and have looked at things in different ways. I think I can help this team in a lot of areas. I think I’ve grown. And I feel I’m better prepared to come in this time and do a better job than I did over the 12 years I was general manager last time.”

Hurney shepharded the team during the 2003 Super Bowl run, and was responsible for drafting current Panthers Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, and Ryan Kalil. He also hired two-time Coach of the Year Ron Rivera in 2011.
