It shouldn’t come as a shock that Smith, Hockenson and Fant make up my top three tight ends, with most boards around the NFL having them as the top three in various orders. For me, Smith is the most complete of the tight ends, as he is a solid blocker who showed some nice route running traits while at Alabama. Hockenson is probably the best blocker in the class – though he could improve his pad level as a run blocker – and while he shows solid athletic traits, he wasn’t asked to do much as a route runner while at Iowa and will need to show that he is able to separate against tight coverage rather than simply being schemed open.

Fant is almost the polar opposite of Hockenson, and he shows good traits as a receiver but needs to improve technically as a blocker. Both Fant and Hockenson are probably good enough at their various strengths to see early playing time while they work on improving their weak points, but the degree to which Hockenson can be an elite receiver and Fant a good blocker still remains to be seen.

After these three, there are a number of players who might interest teams on the final day of the draft, with Jace Sternberger’s potential as a receiver making him the next-best prospect in my opinion. After him there aren’t many, if any, prospects who I think have the potential to be high-level starters – but the likes of Nauta, Sample and Sweeney do enough nice things to be seen as solid rotation pieces down the line.

The only other tight end that I can get excited about is Dawson Knox, who flashes elite receiver traits but his hands are a concern and his blocking is in need of significant improvement. If a team is looking for a late-round longshot developmental option, he is probably the best bet in that regard.

The only player who is ranked very highly on some boards whom I have much lower is Caleb Wilson, who does do some nice things on tape but also struggled significantly as a route runner at UCLA and whose pad level and balance as a blocker should be a concern. For Wilson, these all appear to be the result of his very long legs, as it makes changing direction difficult and also means his center of gravity is very high. His stock has cooled somewhat since he struggled in the Senior Bowl and as with Orlando Brown last year, he is somebody who might see his stock continue to drop if his numbers at theĀ  Combine back up concerns over his agility.

As mentioned earlier, the Panthers are unlikely to draft a tight end in 2019, and it would be hugely shocking to see them be willing to spend a pick on a tight end early enough to secure one of the top three prospects. What should be clear from the big board, however, is that – to me, at least – this might not be the elite tight end class that some are making it out to be, and that when a team takes a tight end early, they might be getting a decent player, but there are no sure-fire elite players in this class and – most crucially – should a tight end go before the Panthers pick at 16, this should be seen as a win for the Panthers.
